KEIGHLEY Cougars brought their three-game losing streak to an end with a pulsating 34-28 victory over York City Knights in the driving Cougar Park rain.

The Cougars got off to the best possible start when, after just 20 seconds, Andy Gabriel broke down the Knights' left side and raced the ball under the sticks as the rain began to pour down.

But the visitors hit back almost immediately when, after an Ash Lindsay knock on, the Knights moved the ball across to the left channel where James Morland found room to get over the line.

York then took the lead on the ten-minute mark as the ball came back to Ben Dent on the zero tackle and the full back sent it over to Tommy Saxton who walked over in the corner.

Cougars re-took the lead when after a wild York offload, the ball came loose and Brendon Rawlins took the ball over from 20 metres with Danny Lawton’s conversion bringing up his 500th point for the club.

Jonny Campbell then opened up an eight-point lead when Andy Smith was caught wandering, allowing the Bulls loanee to dive over in the corner.

The gap was only two points though at half-time as the hooter sounded when Smith found his way over despite the best efforts of Campbell to deny him.

Cougars got on the front foot early in the second half when, from an Ed Smith grubber, Campbell intercepted and raced the length of the field to go in underneath the uprights.

York wouldn’t go down without a fight and closed the gap back to four points when Morland turned through an attempted Ritchie Hawkyard tackle to find his way in at the corner flag.

And the visitors took the lead for the second time in the afternoon when, from Jonny Presley’s grubber, Ed Smith offloaded to Mark Applegarth who rolled over his attempted tackler to touch down.

It was proving to be a pulsating game, and the lead changed hands for the fifth time as Ash Lindsay went through the Knights defence.

Knights levelled the scores after a sloppy bit of play from the Cougars allowed Sam Smeaton to fight over from the scrum to score.

But remarkably, the momentum switched once more as James Feather burrowed over from dummy half to put Keighley back in the lead with what proved to be the winning try, with ten minutes left to play.
