HORIZON Taekwondo Academy are celebrating more international success after winning two gold medals at the Luxembourg Open G1.

Ellie Bowden of Cullingworth earned her first gold at G-Class (international ranking) events after three amazing performances against opponents from Belgium (quarter-finals) and Italy (semi-finals and final).

Meanwhile, Jamie Kidd (Silsden) recorded his second gold at international competitions this year, defeating a rival from Portugal by technical knockout in the final.

Competing in the junior (15-17 years) -55kg category (welterweight), Bowden defeated Djade Lespau of Belgium – the most in-form competitor in her division – 15-9 in the last eight.

She then beat Italian duo Michelle Kovalenko 17-8 and Georgia Cancellieri 5-3 in a swashbuckling final which the Parkside pupil won with the last kick of the match.

Kidd, taking part in the cadet (12-14 years) -61kg category (heavyweight), beat Diogo Rafael Alves Da Costa 20-7 in an entertaining final, in which the Ilkley Grammar student scored with some amazing spinning kicks in front of an impressed group of his Great Britain peers.

This was Kidd's final bout before GB preparations for the Cadet European Championships, in which the 14-year-old is competing in Romania in September.

Also in action in Luxembourg for Horizon was Thomas Henley, who lost 13-7 in the last 16 of the -74kg senior advanced category.

Horizon coach Rick Simpson was delighted by the performances of his students and said: "It was Ellie's day and she had a really good tournament.

"She's missed out on national team selection for the Junior World Championships, so now we are focusing on her next priorities – which this has been the start of.

"The conditions were very challenging, with the humidity and temperature levels being a major factor on most competitors' performances.

"Ellie put this to the back of her mind and got on with business. She showed real determination and never gave up. I'm so proud of her."

Horizon, which has clubs across Bradford, Keighley, Rochdale, Oldham and Chorley, are offering free lessons to beginners for a limited period. Anyone interested can contact Simpson on 07977-065357 or via info@horizontaekwondo.co.uk.
