KEIGHLEY'S British and Commonwealth champion Leah Moorby was in domestic action again last weekend, retaining her -59kg category at the City of Liverpool Open Championships.

The 15-year-old Oakbank pupil was in devastating form, only conceding two points in what was a ranking event for the British National Championships to be held at Manchester Veledrome in September.

Leah's semi-final was against Naomi Bell (Liverpool Academy), who could not cope with the black belt, an opening head shot being followed by two solid body shots and a further head shot as an 8-2 first-round lead was established.

Bell was then withdrawn, which put Leah through to face County Durham's Katy Bone (Chi Taekwondo), who had won the London Open Championships a fortnight previously, which Leah did not enter.

Once again the latter stated her intentions in the first round, two excellent head shots building a 6-0 lead, and there was no let-up in the second round as she stretched the margin to a winning 13-0 with two further headshots and a single body shot.

This was Leah's last competition before the National Championships, which will be used as part of her preparations for the Junior European Championships in Latvia, where she will represent Great Britain for the third time.

"The trip to Latvia is self funding for junior athletes and we are very grateful for any financial support that might be offered if anyone feels they might be able to help", said Leah's dad Gary.

This year, for the first time, fighters in the National Championships will be seeded from various competitions over the last 12 months, and five golds from the five events she has entered means that Leah will be the top seed in her category.
