LUKE Dyson won gold as Keighley-based Strike Taekwondo enjoyed success at Supreme Taekwondo Technical and Sparring Championships in Widnes.

Dyson – a first Dan who was the club's most experienced competitor on the day – came first in sparring, firstly defeating Evans of CDK Taekwondo, followed by Enrico Baracaglia of Sheffield Uni, whom he defeated in a sudden-death round after scores were tied at the end of normal time.

Dyson claimed the winning point with a turning kick to the body. He also had his first outing as a coach, taking young Oliver Smith, aged eight, to gold in his first competitive match.

Senior Mark Ainley won gold in sparring, along with bronze in the power kicking and Poomsae.

Lewis Horne, aged six, won gold with a stoppage in the first round, with older brother Ethan narrowly missing out. Raihan Ahmed won gold out of 28 competitors in the speed kicking event for ten to 13-year-olds.

Strike coach Lisa Winteridge said: "The day was mainly about building experience for our new students; all fought more experienced competitors on the day, and those who lost only narrowly missed out by two or three points in most cases.

"They will learn from this and build on their skill set and confidence ready for the next competition. Our more experienced fighters put on a strong display and set a good example to our younger students."

Others who competed on the day: Layla Smith, Jack Smith, Jasmine Bellamy, Devon Chan, James Kaye, Jacob Craven.
