A SILSDEN world trials biking champion will attempt what could be one of the most memorable feats in motorcycle history.

Dougie Lampkin will next month try to wheelie continuously around the entire 37.7 mile TT race course in the Isle of Man.

His challenge takes place on September 24 and will be shown live on Red Bull TV.

Mr Lampkin said: "I’ve taken on some big tasks before, but this one is absolutely massive as there are so many unknowns.

"Over the last six months it has given me a lot of sleepless nights, and I am under no illusion as to how tough it is going to be on the day.

"What started out as just an idea will soon become reality thanks to the support of Red Bull.

"Like everything I do, I will be giving it 110 per cent to do my best to succeed."

Mr Lampkin will need to use all his experience to complete the 37.7 miles of undulating tarmac and more than 200 corners riding purely on his rear wheel.

He has identified the end of the course as one of the biggest hurdles, as this steep downhill section with left and right hairpin bends will test his stamina and skills.

The weather will also be a big factor, especially on the aptly named “Windy Corner”, which could knock him off his bike and end the wheelie attempt.

While the TT course is known as the spiritual home of British motorbike and is best known for its high speed exploits, Mr Lampkin is aiming to complete the ride in less than two hours at an average speed of around 20-mph.

He has been in training and testing for over six months to prepare his mind, body and bike for the daunting task ahead.

Mr Lampkin will be using his standard Vertigo Combat trial machine, which has been modified for the job of riding solely on the rear wheel over this prolonged distance.

However, he has admitted that this will be "right on the edge" of what is possible on a trials bike.

On the day BBC Ski Sunday presenter Ed Leigh will be joined by renowned mountain bike commentator and trial fanatic Rob Warner, and the duo will host various guests alongside the live feed of Mr Lampkin's challenge.

Adding another dimension to the experience, viewers will have the opportunity to play along via a free smartphone simulator game.

This will be released for download ready for the wheelie ride date of September 24.
