AN INTREPID Denholme woman is looking to make history by completing a non-stop solo swim in treacherous waters around Anglesey for charity.

Liane Llewellyn Hickling, 34, is aiming to be the first person to swim more than 70 miles clockwise around the entire coastline from today (August 18), starting and finishing her test at Moelfre.

She is aiming to complete the challenge in between 24 and 30 hours.

She will battle some of the UK’s strongest tides and most challenging waters, wearing just a swimsuit, swimming hat and goggles, according to British Long Distance Swimming Association rules.

Her training included completing the first recorded swim around St Kilda, Scotland, in June.

Mrs Llewellyn Hickling’s previous tests include becoming only the third British woman to swim the English Channel to France and back. She completed the more than 60-mile course in a time of 27 hours, 35 minutes in 2009.

Mrs Llewellyn Hickling is a team lead physiotherapist in the musculoskeletal and cardiac rehabilitation specialities with the Pennine Acute NHS Trust in Oldham and Bury.

She said: “I’m excited about the challenge and ready to go for it, having worked hard over the past five months to get myself to a position where I feel physically and mentally ready to give it a go.

“This is a whole new kind of challenge for me to face, due to the incredibly complex coastline features and tides around Anglesey.

“The toughest part of the swim will be keeping a consistent swimming speed and to be able to swim harder and increase my speed as necessary to complete sections of the swim.”

She is aiming to raise funds for the Craig Steadman Lifeboat Fund.

Mr Steadman, who was killed in a motorbike accident last year, was a member of the Holyhead lifeboat crew.

His crew-mates are aiming to raise £24,000 to fund part of a new D-Class lifeboat which will be named in his memory.

The boat will be based in Barmouth, Wales, where crews are also fundraising.

Mrs Llewellyn Hickling’s support team will include Nigel Dennis and Eila Wilkinson, of Holyhead-based Sea Kayaking UK/Tidal Waters.

She met the pair when they provided kayak support for popstar Ronan Keating’s Irish Sea relay swim in 2011. Liane was one of the swimmers who supported the celebrity team.
