PEDAL power has provided a wheel boost to good causes.

Cycling marathons tackled by Evolve senior health mentor, Brian Padden, and pupils at Nessfield and St Joseph's primary schools in Keighley coined-in £2,344.

The youngsters together cycled 130 miles – the equivalent of five marathons – in the playground.

They were following the lead of Mr Padden, who had completed a gruelling three-day ride around the Yorkshire Dales for Cancer Research UK.

Some of the money raised by the pupils has gone towards new sports equipment and the remainder to the charity.

Mr Padden was joined on the first day of his Dales challenge by fellow Evolve health mentor, Jack Halliday, who is based at St Joseph's.

"It's been fantastic to see the pupils take part in this so enthusiastically and raise money for Cancer Research and equipment to help them get fitter and boost learning," said Mr Padden.

"We presented the cheque to Cancer Research UK and I used the opportunity to talk about how the money will be spent and how a healthy lifestyle helps to avoid cancer."

Some of the money earmarked for sports equipment will help fund a visit by the Bradford Bulls wheelchair rugby team, which will invite pupils to try out the sport.
