KEIGHLEY householders are being warned to be on their guard against doorstep conmen.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards says older and vulnerable people are particularly at risk.

Typical scammers include bogus callers who try to trick their way into homes, often claiming to be from a utility company, and then steal money.

Some work in pairs, with one distracting the householder while the other searches the property.

Rogue traders are also a problem, carrying out unnecessary or shoddy work – or even none at all – for extortionate sums.

Regional Trading Standards bosses say they are taking measures to crack down on the fraudsters, but that householders can adopt simple measures to help protect themselves.

Cold-calling control zones have been set-up in areas where there have been complaints or residents are considered particularly vulnerable and awareness-raising workshops have been held.

David Lodge, head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, said: "Cold-calling control zones are just one way in which we try to protect the elderly and vulnerable in our community.

"There are over 200 zones in West Yorkshire and the feedback from residents has been extremely positive, with many stating that cold calling has reduced significantly in their area."

Advice to householders includes use a door chain when checking who is calling, don't trade on the doorstep, ask a trusted friend or family member for advice on reputable traders and always report any suspicious activity.
