A SUMMER reading challenge has been launched at libraries including Keighley.

A host of activities will be staged as part of the Big Friendly Read.

This year's challenge is marking the centenary of Roald Dahl's birth.

Every child signing-up to the venture will receive a fold-up wallet with six limited-edition collector cards, each celebrating a popular Dahl theme.

Free events will take place at all Bradford district libraries, celebrating the author and his works.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's executive member for environment, sport and culture, said: "This is a fantastic initiative to give children a love of reading and help them to maintain their literacy skills during the summer.

"The theme this year sounds like great fun, with some wonderful activities taking place."

Events at Keighley Library include making a James and the Giant Peach wall mural on Wednesday, building a crocodile on August 10 and building a Big Friendly Giant on August 17. All sessions are from 11am to 11.45am.
