KEIGHLEY smokers are being urged to stub out the habit during the holy month of Ramadan.

Bradford Council's stop-smoking team is visiting mosques across the district to support Muslims seeking to give-up all forms of tobacco.

Mosque leaders and Imams are being trained to promote smoke-free messages and become 'public health advocates' within their communities.

The move is part of a wider campaign – including visits to schools, community and children's centres and workplaces – to encourage people throughout the Bradford district to ditch cigs.

Support is also being provided for people who use chewing tobacco.

Joanne Nykol, tobacco lead with the council, said: "Quitting smoking can be difficult but our free service is available to offer support.

"This campaign will also help protect the rest of the family, particularly children, from the harmful effects of exposure to second-hand smoke."

Mohammed Idrees, a council stop-smoking specialist, said Ramadan was an ideal time to give-up tobacco.

"It is a period of fasting, prayer, self purification and self-reflection and the perfect time for people to reconsider their lifestyles and make a positive change," he added.
