LONG-awaited signs to restrict parking in Haworth's most famous street have finally been put in place.

The last of the signs required for the new Main Street traffic order to be enforced were installed in time for the start of last week.

They were originally meant to be sited on the street in March, but a mistake led to the wrong type of signs being produced.

A Bradford Council spokesman explained that instead of the wall-mountable signs required, 12 small pole-mountable signs were produced in error.

Worth Valley ward councillor, Rebecca Poulsen, said: "I was advised today [May 17] by highways that the final signs have been put up in Haworth Main Street for the new 'no parking' zone.

"This means anyone parking within the zone could receive a ticket from the parking wardens.

"The wardens will be advising people of the changes during the next couple of weeks, but after then, they will be enforcing the 'no parking' zone.

"It's really good news for the village and I hope people will comply with the rules."

She said the 'no parking' restriction applied from the top of Main Street down to the Fleece Inn, with permitted parking for residents lower down the road.

Parking on the street used to be regulated with yellow lines. But after the road's battered setts were repaired and relaid at considerable expense, it was decided not to restore the lines so as not to spoil the historic character of the street's surface.

Parish councillors in the village warned in 2013 that the lines' absence meant some motorists assumed they could park anywhere they liked on the street.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council chairman, Cllr Angel Kershaw, welcomed the news the signs' installation means the parking order can now be enforced.

She added: "I'm very pleased the signs are up because parking in Main Street had just got silly and there were times when you could barely get past.

"It had become quite dangerous, especially when the street was busy with visitors, as it often is.

"There have been instances where fire engines have not been able to get past and, on two occasions, funeral corteges have been blocked by parked cars.

"When people park inconsiderately, it can quickly cause havoc.

"We hope people will realise the signs are there to make life easier for everyone. This includes the shops because it's not good business for them if people can't get into the shops because of parked cars in the way."

A spokesman for Bradford Council's highways department said: "There is a full parking ban in Main Street, which became enforceable on May 16.

"We do not require lines as this is a 'no parking' zone with signs."
