STRIKING junior doctors taught Keighley parents how to save children’s lives.

Three doctors from Airedale Hospital went straight from the picket line to the classroom this week to lead free lifesaving courses.

At least 15 people took up the offer, including a great-grandmother, expectant mothers, and volunteers from local organisations.

The trio teaching at Keighley Library were Airedale NHS Foundation Trust doctors Rory Clarke and Sindy Siva and paediatric senior house officer James Byrne.

Dr Byrne said: “We wanted to give something back during the strike. We wanted to do something constructive.”

He said that while the course did not result in a certificate, participants learned from experienced professionals how to save the lives of children and babies.

He said: “It’s the same as adult first aid, but tailored for children – like what the do if the child is choking or not breathing, or has collapsed in the street.”

The doctors were pleased with the public response to the two days of two-hour courses, considering they decided only last week to organise the course.
