THE death of a young man from Haworth who died this week while on holiday in Greece is being treated as a possible criminal matter.

Police in Greece have launched an investigation into the death of 23-year-old Danny Kelly, who died on Monday during a break on the Greek island of Zakynthos.

Leeds-based Harrison Bundey Solicitors, who are acting on behalf of Mr Kelly's family, said it is understood that Mr Kelly was the victim of a serious assault and had fled into the sea.

Partner Ruth Bundey emphasised that investigations were still at an early stage, adding that it is possible there will be a second postmortem once Mr Kelly's body is brought back to the UK.

"Once this happens Bradford Coroners office will be making their own inquiries and will liaise with the Greek authorities," she said.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it could not comment on any ongoing police probe.

Mr Kelly was a keen amateur rugby player, who had competed for Cowling Harlequins and Worth Village amateur rugby league teams.
