PUPILS who attend a Keighley school's after-hours cookery club took part in a bake off to demonstrate their prowess in the kitchen.

The students at Holy Family Catholic School made scones, incorporating interesting flavour combinations such as mozzarella and basil, ham and scallion, cranberry, orange and blueberry, and lemon and blue cheese.

The official tasters for the event were members of the school's teaching staff. After a serious amount of sampling they voted the blueberry, lemon and blue cheese and the mozzarella and basil as the most outstanding flavours.

The club is organised by staff member Sheila Hastings. She said: “Our students are very skilled and enthusiastic about cooking. They simply love to come to our club after school each Wednesday, and have produced a huge variety of dishes both sweet and savoury.

"Our recipes are focused on healthy eating, and we highlight the health benefits of fresh, home cooked food."

She added the club comprises a group of up to 20 students ranging from 11 to 15-years-old, who have grown in confidence during the cookery sessions.

"Some students can find their academic studies very challenging," she said.

"But the club provides a different opportunity for them to excel, learn new skills and be prepared for living independently when they leave school for college or university."
