YOBS hurling stones smashed a window on a passenger carriage of a Keighley & Worth Valley Railway train.

The train was passing through Ingrow on its way to Haworth when it was struck by stones last Sunday afternoon. (April 26)

K&WVR spokesman, Jim Shipley, said the damage would have cost about £200 to repair.

"This was safety glass, so no one was hurt," he said. "But there's always the possibility that chucking stones at our trains could cause an injury. It's something we could do without."

He said the stones which hit the carriage were thrown by youths in Ingrow at about 2.45pm.

"It happened on the new housing estate on the Haworth side of Ingrow tunnel," he said. "The coach was inspected, withdrawn from traffic and repaired the following day.

"The matter was reported to police, who attended on the day."

Mr Shipley said incidents of this kind were rare on the railway, and usually tend to happen during school holidays.

"We actively work with schools to explain what the railway is to the kids," he added.

"This helps us in two ways, because it may enable us to pick up some fresh, youthful volunteers.

"It also makes the children aware of the dangers of trespassing on the railways, not just on our line but the main line as well where there is the additional danger of electrocution."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed the train had been struck and damaged by a stone as it was leaving Ingrow.

He asked anyone with information to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
