VOLUNTEERS planted a fruit-bearing hedge during the latest session at the Braithwaite community allotments.
Once grown, the 35-metre hedge will separate the allotment from a stream and provide an enclosed area for beehives.
The team also planted wildflower seeds as part of ongoing work to transform the rundown allotment, off North Dean Road, into an ‘outdoor community centre’.
The volunteers at the session earlier this month included local residents, and young people from across West Yorkshire who are members of the National Citizens Service.
The allotment is being set up with a £9,900 grant from the Big Lottery Awards For All fund.
Spokesman Alex Brown said: “It’s slow and hard work, but we’re getting there, and the allotment is looking good. We have a few people who come every time.”
Mr Brown said local people were welcome to attend the latest work sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. The intention is to plant pear and apple trees to create an orchard.
