A KEIGHLEY primary school's garden of reflection which was attacked by vandals should soon be restored and even better than before.

The courtyard garden at Worth Valley Primary was damaged by yobs the day after school broke up for the summer holidays.

Chairman of governors Adam Getliff said the vandals had used hammers to smash up bird boxes, a bird feeder and trellises.

He noted that the school had been considering how to improve the garden even before the damage was inflicted.

"We're looking for local traders who would be prepared to contribute equipment," he added. "We'd like to make this space much better for the kids to use.

"It's an area of about 10 by 20 metres, and it has got a bit overgrown over the summer.

"We want to replant some of the flowerbeds to attract more wildlife, and create a seating area.

"We'd like a spot where the pupils would be able to do their own planting, and maybe have some decking as well. These are all things that pupils had suggested before the vandalism happened."

He said any businesses wishing to donate support should get in touch with the school on 01535 604240.

One firm which has already stepped in to make the initiative a success is Oakworth-based D and D Property Services, run by business partners Darren Thompson and Danielle Luscombe.

Mr Thompson said he found out about the school's plans from his nine-year-old daughter Katie, who is a pupil at Worth Valley Primary.

Responding to the vandalism incident he said: "It's disgusting, mindless and there's just no need for it. We've seen this same problem at various other schools as well. I just hope they catch the people who did it."

He said his company was going to be providing labour for the project, and had approached another company – Nelson's Builders' Merchants, in Gresley Road – which will be supplying decking.

Mr Thompson said: "We're due to start work today (Sept 18) and should have it done within two or three weeks, depending on the weather.

"We also do quite a lot of work at Ingrow and Long Lee schools. It's all about giving something back to the community."
