A KEIGHLEY school now has a new resident, a two-year-old corn snake called Sid!

Sid the snake is settling into his new home at University Academy Keighley, after he was bought from a reptile shop in Shipley.

He was purchased by the school for the UAK science department following a request from science teacher Azhar Ishfaq, who was keen to find more ways of bringing classroom learning to life.

Mr Ishfaq explained: "I started off by having some plants brought into the classroom, then I also got a fish tank with tropical fish.

"I'd really wanted a snake, though it took a while to convince the senior teachers!

"I'm pleased that they have accepted this. It's something a bit different."

Sid has his own purpose-built vivarium, and as this type of snake does not harm humans he can be carefully handled by pupils under supervision.

Mr Ishfaq said: "In the mornings he's normally asleep, but once I get him out of the vivarium it's hard to put him back in because he likes being handled.

"We've strict processes in place, the pupils have to wash their hands before and after they touch him, both for their benefit and his.

"They really enjoy having a snake, but for those who are a bit scared I make sure they stand at the back whenever we get him out, so they feel safe."

He added: "Having animals in the classroom enhances the learning environment and increases students' scientific curiosity.

"It also provides an opportunity for students to interact with animals as they may not get this chance at home. Observing and caring for an animal instils a sense of responsibility and respect for life."
