A MILITARY history project has made progress with identifying people in a photo depicting some of the first men from Keighley who fought in the First World War.

The Men of Worth group, which researches the stories of local people who served their country during the conflict, has been given a rare group photo of members of Keighley's Old Contemptibles Association. (KOCA)

This organisation represented Keighley district men who were part of the 1914 British Expeditionary Force, dispatched to France and Belgium at the outbreak of the First World War.

The photo dates from between 1938 and 1946, and shows 40 association members outside Prince Smith Sport Club Pavilion, in Keighley.

The image was handed to Men of Worth on August 4 by the son of one of the men in the photo.

Men of Worth member Andy Wade said that following an appeal for information, he and his colleagues have names for 18 of the men in the photo, but are keen to identify the remaining 22.

"We've had people contacting us via Facebook and e-mail, and also one person who rung us up," he said. "It's not bad going for only a week or two."

People who can identify more of the men can visit menofworth.org.uk to contact Mr Wade or his colleague Ian Walkden.
