OAKWORTH'S Holden Park played host to a wondrous gathering of mythical creatures for the village's latest Fairy Fest.

The occasion, organised by the Friends of Holden Park, saw adults and children alike come dressed in a colourful range of fairytale costumes to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment.

Hundreds of people came along from noon last Saturday (August 9) to sample live music, competitions, street performers, dancing and a variety of stalls. There was also face painting, balloon modelling and craft stalls.

Organisers say the event raised at least £200, which will go towards creating a play area for teenagers in the park., to complement the existing facility designed for younger children.

Julie Eaton, a member of Holden Park's friends group, said: "It went well, we had a lovely afternoon.

"Numbers-wise I think we were a bit down on last year, but plenty of people still turned up and the stalls did O.K.

"We sold some of the bikes we'd be collecting for the Tour de France.

"The weather was a bit wet early in the afternoon, but later it got quite warm, so we were really lucky.

"It was mostly local people there, but we had been getting phone calls asking about the event from as far off as Colne and the Lake District."

She added that popular attractions on the day included performances by the North Wind Tribal Dancers, Hi Energy Dance Academy and Spencer the Goblin.

"There weren't as many adults in fancy dress this time, but we still had lots of children in costume," she said.

"We also had the fairy bikers from the Royal British Legion, who were very popular. They did the judging for the fancy dress competition."

She paid tribute to the help provided by the security staff and also to Oakworth Primary School, Oakworth Methodist Church and the medical surgery which provided parking spaces.

Next year's Oakworth Fairy Fest should take place on August 8.
